The Breed History and origins of a saint bernard- is through the alps between Italy and Switzerland. Little Saint Bernards pass their history between France and Italy.    

Their Decendants of their breed- crossed with Newfoundland and a Phyrenean Sheepdog. Saint Bernards was bred in the monastary around 1660.   

Saint bernards Physical Traits-    

Head- Large and Massive, circumference of the skull being more than double the length of the head from nose to occiput. From stop to tip of nose should be moderately short. Full at eye, square at the muzzle. Lips are deep through out, not to pendulous, from nose to the stop should be straight. Skull should be broad, rounded at top.   

Ears- Medium size, lying close to cheek strong at their base but not heavily feathered.   

Eyes- Small deep set, dark color, not close together, lower eyelid should drop   

Nose- large, black, well developed nostrils, teeth should be level.    

Expression- Should betoken benevotence, dignity, and intelligence.    

Neck- Lengthy, muscular, slightly arched, dewlap developed. Shoulder broad and sloping well up at the withers.

Geberal description of the Body- Chest wide and deep. Back level as far as the haunchers, slightly arched over loins. Ribs well rounded and carried well back. Loin wide and very muscular.    

Tail- Set rather high, long. in long coated variety, bushy. Carried low when in repose when excited, slightly above line of the back.   

Legs- Perfectly straight, strong in bone, good length, hind legs very muscular. Feet very large compact well arched toes.    

Size- Be at least 30 inches in height at shoulder(male) 27 inches(female). Well poportioned, great substance. General outline with great power and capability of endurance.   

Coat-   

Long coated- Dense and flat, rather further round the kneck, thighs feathered not to heavily.    

Short coated- Dense hard flat and short slightly feathered on thighs and tail    

Color- Redish, orange, shades of brindle white with patches on body. White Muzzle, white blaze up face, white collar around neck, white chest, forelegs, feet and end of tail. Black shadings on face and ears. Aspot on top of head and is desireable. Eyes, and ears are dark shade of red.     

Weight- 170 pounds to 210 pounds (male) 160 to 190 pounds (female)    

Group- Working Dogs - known for rescuers.

Temperament of breed- Gental and friendly (extremely) slowly moving patient and obedient. Extremely loyal, eager and willing to please. Highly intelligent and easy to train. Has a highly developed sense of smell has a sixth sense about impending danger from storms and avalanches.      

Interesting Facts- Famous for its excellant sense of smell and its ability to foretell the storms. Dogs are kept for companionship. Not an active breed. 1-2 walks a day. Dont over exercise bernard puppies until bones are strong. Sheds twice a year. Comb, and brush 2-3 times a week. Pay attention to their eyes, they tend to water; which means there eyes need to be checked and/or cleaned often. Life span 8-10 years.
